What is adaptive equipment?

Adaptive equipment, also known as assistive technology, provides people with practical solutions to complete daily life activities. Adaptive equipment not only improves the user's quality of life, it also decreases their dependence on carers.

Adaptive equipment can help people to:

Participate more fully in activities in their home, school, workplace and community
Support carers to care by assisting with showering, dressing, and eating
Make mobility safer and easier
Ensure personal safety by using personal alarm systems at home
Make recreational activities much easier

How can an occupational therapist help with adaptive equipment?

I can help clients choose the right adaptive equipment for their needs. Equipment is often available to trial so that the client can make an informed decision. Some items can be customised to fit the client.

I typically prescribe adaptive equipment in combination with home modifications, such has grab rails. I also train clients and carers to use their adaptive equipment safely and effectively.

Some common types of adaptive equipment I prescribe and fit include:

Bathroom aids – toileting equipment, shower chairs, bath boards, easy-use taps
Kitchen aids – jar openers, easy-pour kettles
Walking aids – walking sticks, wheelie walkers
Wheelchairs and scooters
Bed aids – adjustable beds and mattresses
Seating aids – electric lift recliner chairs, elderly care armchairs, adjustable height chairs
Dressing aids – sock aids, long-handled shoe horns
Pressure care aids - cushions and mattresses
